Discuss about our experiences: which cities have we visited, what is the ideal city for us and what for the society? What are the problems modern cities face? How do we improve the quality of life there?

Yanchee Lau presented details
of project including project brief – “Choose a city anywhere in the world and
produce a design which will improve the lives of its citizens”
·
Groups were selected and
brought together.
·
EG made suggestion that the
team move to the British Museum for an inspirational setting for the first
meeting.
·
Team discussed potential
cities, including; Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, Barcelona and Thessaloniki.
Decision made to adopt a city in which at least one of the team had previously
lived (Ruled out Barcelona).
·
EG presented problems in
Thessaloniki and how they might be addressed.
·
GA & JM went through same process
for Glasgow.
·
Thessaloniki identified as most
promising city – research objectives identified and delegated to the team
members.
·
Outline plan for project discussed

JM & GA presented concept
of subterranean waste processing facility with conveyor system and reverse heat
transfer systems.

EG presented concept of “the
cube of responsibility”
·
RRW presented concept of inner-city
elevated garden with vegetable growing facility
·
RRW also presented concept for
water de-salination plant with integrated greenhouse in Thessaloniki.
·
Team discussed options and
decided on the cube of responsibility as best option.
·
Yanchee Lau discussed options
with team and observed that the proposed design would not adequately address
the brief.
·
Team decided to re-consider
design options for next session.

RRW presented concept of
elevated green space in Shanghai, China. Team agreed that the idea had
significant merit.
·
Team developed concept into
idea of using elevated skywalk between existing buildings with green elements.
·
Research objectives delegated
for next session.

developed.

Discussed proposal with Yanchee
and two architectural consultants with mixed views.

Suggestion made to “think
bigger and madder”

the structure to city elements on the ground.
